Jessica's Story

Jessica* came to us single and pregnant.

Though she and her baby’s father had agreed to co-parent, he was in trouble with the law and would not be available to help for the first few years. As she was searching for support and resources to prepare for parenting her daughter alone, a friend told her about the Parenting Education Program (PEP) here at AWC.

Although Jessica was a bit overwhelmed by what lay ahead for her, she wanted to learn how to be a good mom. Through PEP classes, she learned all that she could about successful breastfeeding and caring for her newborn baby, as well as managing her time and finances. She asked a lot of questions, often taking notes to reference later, and also reached out to various community resources that AWC recommended.

After her daughter’s birth, Jessica fell instantly in love with her but struggled during the first few weeks to adjust to sleepless nights, difficulties in breastfeeding, and keeping up with the demands of single parenthood. Despite her exhaustion, Jessica was determined to faithfully attend her AWC appointments. She even walked here each week because she had no other transportation, and arrived cheerful and eager to learn.

Over the past twelve months, Jessica has found a new job, is furthering her education, and continues to parent her baby on her own. “A Woman’s Concern has been a great support system,” she wrote. “They have given amazing and honest advice and are a shoulder to lean on.”

After graduating from PEP this winter, Jessica is looking forward to returning to AWC for Tot Spot, our play group for moms and toddlers.

Jessica is proof that—despite personal challenges to overcome—affirmation, good community resources, and unconditional support can make a world of difference. She is making goals for herself and accomplishing things that had once seemed impossible. She sees hope for her future and is ready to face the hard things ahead with the same courage she has learned this year.

We are so proud of the growth we have seen in Jessica. Hers is a life changed by hope, and, because of that, her daughter’s life will be changed too.
