New Year, New Programs (Part 5)

Fatherhood Mentorship Program

The final post in our series highlighting our new, expanded, and upcoming programs & services focuses on our upcoming Fatherhood Mentorship program.

So, why a new program for fathers?

Our name may be A Woman’s Concern, but learning about pregnancy and parenting is not just for women. When fathers are equipped and present, women and families are more likely to thrive. Check out these stats on the negative effects on families when fathers aren’t around:

  • 25% of households with children in the US are fatherless. *

  • A teen raised in a home that is absent a father is 7 times more likely to become pregnant as a teen. *

  • Fatherless families are 44% more likely to raise a child in poverty. **

  • 90% of all homeless and runaway children are fatherless. **

  • Of teens who abuse alcohol or drugs, 71% come from fatherless homes. **

  • 80% of adolescents in psychiatric hospitals are from fatherless homes and twice as likely to commit suicide. **

Our Plan

Studies show that women and children are better served when the men in their lives have a broad skill set on how to be a healthy, helpful father and partner. † Our proposed Fatherhood Mentoring program will be integrated with our current Parenting Education Program (PEP), with additional individual, specialized classes for interested dads who attend PEP with their partner as well as those interested in attending on their own.

We’re also planning to host The Fatherhood Journey—a structured 12-week program for dads—in partnership with Family of Restoration Ministries (FoRM). Additionally, our space in the Hope House (the carriage house behind our main location at 1102 Millersville Pike) allows us to host fatherhood-focused seminars, drop-in events, and support groups in the future. Stay tuned for more on all of that.

2019 is shaping up to be quite an exciting year for A Woman’s Concern, and we’re excited to bring these new and expanded programs to the Lancaster community!
