A Woman's Concern

Do I have to tell my parents I want to have an abortion?

You think you’re pregnant, or you just received a positive pregnancy test. You cannot imagine how you could have a baby right now. We know it’s a scary time. We know you don’t want to tell your parents.

But what are the facts?

If you are a minor (under 18 years old), you need to have your parents’ permission before choosing an abortion.

The Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act requires that abortion providers give a woman information about how her baby is developing, the dangers of abortion for her health, and alternatives available to her, including financial assistance. The woman must take a 24-hour period to consider this information before any procedure can be done. She has the right to refuse any or all of the information, but it must be made available to her.

This also requires minors to have parental consent to have an abortion. This parent must attend the information meeting with the minor to provide their consent and receive information about the abortion procedure.
